A cellist and a singer perform among the plants in one of Royaumont's gardens. Around them, everything seems to quiver; cardoons, burdocks and giant spinach seem to vibrate in unison. This is the "Magic Square" effect!

About thirty loudspeakers are in fact hidden under the plants in this part of the vegetable garden. All are connected to an innovative broadcasting system, developed in collaboration with Ircam and sound artist Manuel Poletti from the Music Unit creation studio. This invisible device allows the two young musicians to create, in close proximity to the spectators, a meditative work by a composer who was awarded the 2018 Voix Nouvelles Academy, the Japanese Kaito Nakahori.

New artists in residence, cellist Marie Ythier and soprano Johanna Vargas will also address a recent work by Chinese artist Huihui Cheng (Festival regulars remember the piano costume she imagined for Claudia Chan in 2017) or a cello solo. by the Englishman Jonathan Harvey, whose Angels were immortalized by the Métaboles during the 2019 Festival. Once the concert is over, the loudspeakers will resume their discreet and fearful life, as the composer Jean-Luc Hervé imagined it: they throughout the day emit sounds inspired by nature, at a volume and density that vary according to the attitude of the listeners. It is only by approaching gently that we fully savor this invitation to listen to our environment.
